I'm purchasing a 2001 Larson 19' bowrider with the 4.3 volvo. Owner says the tach quit working a while ago.

Here's a picture...

Is it likely that it's the gauge itself? Or a sending unit?

Just wondering what the best way to trouble shoot.

Thanks,
Steve

It's likely the gauge. There shouldn't be sending unit. It uses an electronic signal from the ignition. My tach would do the same thing off and on. When I wiggled the post on the tach for the pickup wire it would start working. I took it out and made sure the connections were clean and it works fine now. Hot, cold, humidity and vibration play hell on electronics and connections.
