Tach dosen't go to 0 when motor dies

I just picked up a new rig with twin 1993 200hp Ocean runners on it (Just in time for $3 gas) and when I am docking some times the port motor will stall and the tach just sits at last rpm. It won’t zero out till I turn the key off and back on.

I believe all the gauges to be OMC factory equipment. Any suggestions?

Mac

This seems to happen a lot. I've come across a number of motors that run fine, with exactly what you describe.

Their owners didn't lose sleep.

Perfectly normal for gages not to "zero" until powered up again.

But it should zero out if the motor dies and the key is still on. Check for clean and tight battery connections. You may be losing your connection to the battery.

I'll check the batt connnections.

Not going to 0 is the problem. When I loose an engine to a stall while docking I'd like to know wich one to crank back up with out taking a walk to the back of the boat.

Mac

I can see how that would be problem. If thats normal, for not zeroing ,What about looking at water pressure gauge or maybe the volt gauge.

I might be repeating what WillyBWright said.If the engine stalls the tach. will,or should,go to zero. But if it lost its ignition,it wouldnt go back to zero.I think something electrical shut it down.V12mac,this is about all I can think of.

I am pushing almost 14 volts on that motor, could over voltage shut down the motor?
Mac

The zeroing of the tachometer is not acomplished by a lack of ignition as the voltage is still being applied to the tachometer (key on).

It is activated and zeroed by eliminating the circuit (key off), then reactivating the circuit (key on).

You might compare the circuit with the S.L.O.W. circuit. It also cannot be reactivated unless the circuit is eliminated (key off - key on).

The idle problem... Have you checked the compression on all cylinders? What are the readings?

With the s/plugs removed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders with a strong blue lightning like snap. Does it?

If the above two areas are as they should be, the idle problem is usually due to fouled carburetors (common if the engine has sat for a few months or so). Or the idle may simply be too low. On a flushette, the idle rpm of a 20" shaft engine should be 1000 rpm, a 25" shaft 1200 rpm.

You can check the carbs by having the carburetor face plate off, the engine running at idle, then one carb at a time... srick two fingers into the carb throat (acting as a manual choke). If the rpms increase and the engine smooths out somewhat, that carburetor is fouled and will require cleaning and rebuilding.

I am running mixed gas along with the VRO till I can comfirm everything is working correctly on this rig. I think this is causing them to stall once and a while when cold. I should be back to normal mix soon.
Mac
