have a 1966 merc 500 and am having some prop issues, need a tach to see where i'm at. What works with it, where can i get and how many poles do u set it at. I've looked on this site at the tachs, but they don't really give you very much info

dairic, in 1966 all 500s where magneto ign. but if the engine has a alternator you may use one the is powered by it, Mercury started that in the 70s

Sorry I guess I misunderstood the question, you need a tach that runs off the magneto most are adjustable and you need one that is adjustable to 4 pulses per revelution. I think teleflex, stewart warner and even some brands that are sold by some automotive stores and catalog companies have them available

Ok. The tachs at iboats.com and other places will work. You need a tach you can set to 12 pole or 6 pulse. They hook to either yellow wire at your rectifier. instructions are usually included.
