Tach goes from 0 to 4000 rpm

Hi. I am looking for help or ideas why my tach is stuck at 4000 rpm. It will read zero when I start it up then go up to 4000 rpm regardless of the throttle position. I have a 1982 OMC 3.8 liter. Do I need to buy a new tach or can I fix this problem.<br /><br />Thanks

That just about has got to be a bad tach and they are not service repairable

deputy:<br />If you want to keep it original check the web for <br />tachometer repair.Mine is acting up to.I did a search and found a few places that think thay can repair them.

Can I keep the original dial and just cahnge the rest? Where does it hook up to the engine?
