Tach gone then smoke

Last Friday I noticed my tack stopped working. Everything else worked fine, didn't notice any other problems. On Saturday, I was going to take the kids tubing and noticed smoke coming from under the cowling. I shut it down immediately.

When I took the cowling off I noticed the rectifier/regulator was melting down. I when to the local marina and they give me a part (# 586075) when I opened the box I looked used. Owner claimed that I was just installed on a different motor during troubleshooting by the previous owner and was taken off again. Anyway he gave the part to me at ? price and said I could bring it back if it didn?t work.

I installed it, the motor fired up with out any problems. When I applied the power everything seemed fine RPM's started to clime until we hit about 1500-2000 RPM, at this point the tack when to zero? I backed off to idle and the tach bounced back to around 800 RPM, applied the power and it did exactly the same thing. I also noticed that my voltage gage didn?t move up it stayed at 12V until I hit the trim switch at which point it went down. The voltage gage never went past 12.5V regardless of how much power I applied, indicating that the battery was not being charged. I didn?t notice this before all the problems started but really can?t say it didn?t exist.

My question is; could this all be related to the new part? Or could the regulator problem be a result of something else going bad (stator?). I was hoping to do the work myself since its an easy part to replace, however the part is $280 and I don?t want to burn another one up.

I have 1996 90Hp Model # E90ELEDR

Thanks

Usually the bad rectifier would damage the other components. Take it back and insist on a new one.

More importantly, the regulated rectifier units usually fail because the water was not reaching/cooling them, so you need to find out why it went bad.

Thanks, part was returned, I'm going to bring it into a different guy next Monday.

do the tsats also control the water going to the regulator/rectifier? The cooling system was serviced last year. I checked the water coming out of the tell tail and it was warm.

Re: Tach gone then smoke

The water in that cavity is on the incoming side. Sometimes air gets trapped in there and causes a problem.

There are other possible reasons for rectifier failure, such as loose battery cables, bad ignition switches, switching batteries while running with the wrong kind of battery switch, bad battery cables, and reversing polarity.
