Tach harness question

Have a 1970 vintage control box and I want to install a tach for the motor.

Are current tach harnesses compatible with this vintage control box? If not, what do I need for the Mercontrol type box?

Thanks

Re: Tach harness question

Moody, Is there a threeprong connector on the front of the MerControl? It may have a cover over it.

If so, the +12V, -12V and Tach signal are the three connections available.

You need to see if you can get a molded connector for this. It will have black, white and brown wires (if newer it will be purple. black and grey) White(or purple) is +12V, Black is ground, Brown (or grey) is the tach signal. Any standard tach will work, however, you need to move the brown wire on the Non-dissy side of the switchbox to and connect it to one of the yellow stator wires.

Chris yes there is a 3 pronged female connector on the front of the control box.

What I was wondering though, have the style of connector remained the same over the years or do I need to find a specific vintage harness.

Re: Tach harness question

I do not know how long Merc used the three prong connector. My '77 Merc had one, so that is at least 7 years. You should be able to find one floating around.
