Tach input moved to stator still causing problems. Bad stator?

Hi I have a 1992 65hp WMLE. I put a tach on it last year and the grey wire was dead. Did some research and found out I can use the yellow wire from the stator and that worked fine for a few weeks then intermittently would die. Thought it was the tach so i tried another but similer problems. System dont appear to be charging while the tach isnt working either.

So if im taking the signal right from the stator and that tach isnt working then the stator must be bad right? But If i check voltage across both yellow leads I get 30+ VAC even while the tach isnt working? This doesnt really make sense. Could it be that my stator is ok and a bad rectifier is causing all the inconsistent results?

Sounds like you may have had a bad rectifier to begin with and by continuing to run it that way you could have damaged the stator as well.

You need to test both units completely as per the instructions in the service manual to be sure.

The ligthing coil resistance reading is 0.6 ohms which is in spec. Also says in the service manual something about POS voltage but I dont have a peak reading meter. But it is putting out 30 volts AC when idling so that should be fine. I mean resistance is good so only possible problem would be broken wire that occasionaly opens the circuit, but when running it puts out a steady voltage so it should be fine right? Anything else that could be wrong with it?

I found some more tests that I can do on the rectifier at the CDI Electronics website. But I noticed that in the service manual, it states that the purple wire must recieve 12v in order for the charge system to operate. Does this means I would have the put 12v to the purple wire to perform those tests?

Will running the tach from the yellow stator wire damage the tach or stator? Can it be ran continuously like this or should this be just for testing at idle?
