Thinking about getting one of those Tiny Tachs for my '79 'rude 70hp; question is, how do you route the cable through the engine cowling?

If it means drilling, or taking the wiring harness apart I'd rather do without.

thanks,
jtw

Run it along the wiring harness into the engine compartment. Zip tie it.

Before you get carried away with that..

check inside the controller, you might find a grey wire floating around in there that isnt' hooked up to anything.. if so, then you already have a tacho feed wire..

Its a 70HP and its late 70's, I'd almost bet money that it already has a tach pickup in the controller.

What I mean by this, you can pick up a normal tach and hook up to the grey wire in the controller..
I have telleflex tacho, hooked up to an older 100HP johnson.. and there was no running wires from the motor to the controls to do it..

my tacho (whole dash actually) came from this guy:
kv-e

rgds

Franki

Thanks for the tip, Franki, I'll look for the grey wire before I buy anything. It just looks to me like the wiring harness port isn't big enough for another wire. Guess there's always room for one more?

jtw

Re: Tach installation question

The Tiny Tach uses a very small diameter wire so it will fit along side the wiring harness that goes into the motor. The gray wire won't help you for this tach because the Tiny Tach senses the "pulse" from a plug wire around which the tach wire is wrapped.
