Tach oil light and RPM question.

Well, my project boat is completed and in the water. I remember the tach had three lights on the bottom of it for the oil level. I was out on the water yesterday, looked the tach and only saw the green light on. I’m not exactly sure but I thought there was supposed to be two lights on. Should there be two lights on or just one. (1989 yamaha 90)

I have one more problem that concerns the idle. While I was on the water I found the idle was set at 1100-1200 RPMs. I got the boat home and adjusted the idle screw out but the idle didn’t drop. If I push down on the throttle linkage the idle will drop. As soon as I let go it goes back up. I have a repair manual but it doesn’t state how to lower it. How do I lower it?

Re: Tach oil light and RPM question.

Dont knoww about the idle, but the three lights would be
green= full oil level,good
yellow=getting low on oil, need to fill
red=your darn near out, safemode kicks in and you wish you had filled it up when it was yellow!
They only come on one at a time.Go here and learn all about the yam oil system
http://www.bassandwalleyeboats.com/output.cfm?id=942859

Re: Tach oil light and RPM question.

CLL,

The idle can be held high by the cam roller from the throttle connection, or by the CDI linkage or by the cable adjustment.

The manual should guide you how to set all of the above.

Before hitting the water I would check the CDI linkage and remove the silencer and check the synchronisation. Then get the motor warm and loosen the cam roller. You can now adjust the idle in forward. Lastly you can then adjust the cam roller to just miss the guide. You may need to adjust the cable depending upon other adjustments.

Hope this helps

Ian

Re: Tach oil light and RPM question.

if yours is an oil injected model also disconnect the oil pump link rod before attemtping the above. the oil link rod is usually found on the port side of the lower carburettor. all of the rods you disconnect will likely need adjusting once you have synchronised your carb butterflies and set your desired idle speed.
cam to cam follower is important it will be the difference between a smooth acceleration and shuddering.
