tach on 150 blackmax

trying to figure out if my tach gauge is bad or if its got a bad wire on the motor? tach worked for a little wile when i bought the boat but the other day i was leaving the ramp and hit about 3k rpm and the tach just droped to 0. not really sure where to start looking. any suggestions?

Remove the gray sender wire from the tach the remove the bonnet find the rectifier and the terminal with a gray wire on it, with water to the engine start the engine with a AC volt meter the voltage should be the same at the rectifier end of the gray wire and the end that is disconnected from the tach. If it's not you have a wiring problem if it's not the tach is shot.
