Tach options for 30hp Johnson electric start

Hello everyone,

On the wiring harness that runs up to the controls, theres an extra plug in (small.. I think 4 pin) that the local shop says brings power to the console. They say I can plug a tach into it but didn't know what were the options.
It's a '95 30hp Johnson - electric start

I think I'd rather do this than the Tiny Tach if there's an option.

Hoping someone's already figured this one out.

Thanks, LIPNS

Should be 3 pins, wires are black, purple and grey, and any tach will work as long as it is for a 2 stroke and you can adjust the poles, but most any tach you can get for a 2 stroke outboard will work.

You can get an adapter for that plug.

OK, that's good news. Couple questions - I want to get a tach from iboats. How do I know if it will have the right plug to match what I have?

Also, what does adjusting the poles mean?

thanks

Oops, didn't see you mention about an adapter for that plug. Still, how do I know which one to order? I doubt all 3 pins are the some.

Ya, 3 wires is pretty univeral, just get the adapter for a Johnson/Evinrude.

Most newer tachs have a switch on the back that you set to corrspond to the number of alternator poles on your motor. Some confusion occurs because it may be stated in poles or pulses. 10 poles = 5 pulses, which might be what your motor is, but check to make sure. It's too new for me, and I very well probably am wrong on the number.
