Tach Pins at Redline When Key is turned "ON"

Hi,<br /><br />I'm in the process of renewing an 85 HP Merc that has been sitting for 20 years.<br /><br />When I hook up a battery and turn the key to "ON"...the needle on the tach pins at redline.<br /><br />Is this a warning sign that there are going to be faulty components in the ignition system?<br /><br />I haven't started it yet...so I don't know what the Tach will do when the engine is running.<br /><br />Thanks, Chuck
