Tach problems, regulator/rectifier issue?

I?m having problems with my tach and plan to troubleshoot it using the method described here.

(Testing Tachometer With Water Cooled Regulator/Rectifier, by Joe Reeves)

As described in the post, can I hook the gray wire to the terminal post and leave it like that all day while I run around on the boat? Will it hurt anything? The reasoning for this is my problem is not consistent and won?t occur in the driveway and typically only occurs at high rpms. I need to run this test for quite some time just to recreate the problem.

The tach was replaced less than a year ago by the previous owner so I feel it works fine. It displays fine in the driveway, at idle, and at low rpms. However, typically when I get over 4000 rpms, it drops to zero, totally dead. Sometimes it will wake up and bounce from zero to my current rpm range or come alive for a minute or two then drop back to zero. Other times it works fine. The main problem seems to occur at higher rpms and after a while of mocking me it just goes to zero and stays there. If I slow down, it comes alive and works fine. Also, at about 3500 rpms or higher if I stay there and use the electric trim/tilt, while I have the trim/tilt engaged the rpms on the gauge will drop slightly. The motor is not slowing, I don?t think the rpms actually drop, it?s just the gauge that drops.

Since there is a higher demand for power at high rpms and since the gauge will drop when I increase the power load by engaging the power trim/tilt, I feel this is a rectifier/regulator problem (mine is combined). Anyone have any comments on that?

Thanks in advance.

First thing I would do is look for a loose or bad connection. Also look at the back of the tach and be sure the selector is pointing to 6P.

I tore what's left of my grey hair out on a similar problem with my boat. Finally took the remote control apart, thinking maybe something like the throttle cable was bumping a wire and causing a short. Mine worked fine up to 4000 RPM, then went nuts at higher throttle settings, but the actual RPMs and boat speed were normal. Couldn't find anything, put it all back together and it's worked just fine ever since. I'm convinced it is a loose or shorting wire someplace, but can't find it. But, hey it's working.

Yep, selector is on 6P. Didn't notice anything loose on the back of the gauge but tightened them just a hair anyway.

Does the wiring run through the remote control?

Anyone have any ideas whether or not I can run it all day long hooked up as Joe Reeves suggested? Joe?

Thanks

Does anyone know if I can hook the gray wire to the terminal post and leave it like that all day while I run around on the boat?

Joe's post suggests this test but does not mention if it's save to leave it this way all day.

Thanks

Yes, you can run all day that way. Just be sure to leave to original wie unhooked in case it is grounded out some where.

If you read through the test as I wrote it, you can test the tach to see if it's okay or not. And if that tachometer is okay, you can of course leave it connected that way (yellow wire) which won't hurt the tachometer and leaving the gray wire connected to nothing is also okay BUT keep in mind that the faulty regulator/rectifier is going to burst into flames eventually.

Re: Tach problems, regulator/rectifier issue?

Thanks for the responses. My intent is NOT to leave it like that forever but to test it while I'm out all day. I just don't want to go out and then after running for some time stop someplace calm and change it back (while saltwater inevitably splashes me at least once) so I can continue my day on the water.

I used your test this weekend and the tach works fine so I have a regulator/rectifier issue and I will replace it this week.

Thanks for the instructions Joe Reeves, they were very helpful and easy to follow.
