Tach Question

Hello, I have a 96 Sunbird That I picked up. I am trying to get the gauges working. I am down to all but the tach working. I get no movement in the needle at all when the key is switched on or off. I have power to the purple wire on the back of the tach and have a good ground also going to it. What kind of power or signal should I be getting on the gray wire. I dont want to fry andything so any helpd would be great. It may just be a bad Tach but am not sure. Engine is a 1996 Evinrude 88 SPL,Thanks.

The grey tach signal wire will be connected to the stator at the Voltage regulator. You should see an AC voltage on it, when the motor is running.
