Tach reading incorrectly

Need a little help from the experts. On Saturday I had the boat out for a few hours and everything ran great. Decided to leave it in the river at my friends place for the night and go back out again on Sunday. Well I fire up the boat today and the tach is reading about 3k rpm at idle. After letting it warm up it was still way off, going through the channel to the lake at no wake speed it was reading 5000 rpm. Once I got out to the open water and opened it up to cruising speed the tach was pegged but the engine sounded like it's usual self at around 3000rpm. After anchoring at the sand bar when I started it up it was reading closer to accurate but still off by easily 1000 rpm.

Where should I begin to look to trouble shoot this? It's a 5.0L Volvo penta engine and the gauges are Faria all in my 2004 Monterey 190ls. Could it be just a poor signal or the gauge is in need of replacement? Also just put it over the 100 hour mark.

Re: Tach reading incorrectly

Loose connection or poor ground? Tap the gauge and see if it corrects or reads incorrectly. Problem is likely up front. Likely just past warranty too.

Re: Tach reading incorrectly

I started the boat up on muffs this evening and the problem continues, I checked under the dash and everything is connected firmly to the tach. When I tapped on the tach with my finger it did cause the needle to move all about. I.E. from 3k rpm to past 6k, then back down to about 1k rpm. Does this sound like it's the instrument that's at fault here or should I be checking something on the engine?

Still sounds like the gauge or the wiring. Have someone watch the gauge for fluctuations as you wiggle the wires. See if you can follow the wires to check the other ends too. Unfortunately it might be an internal problem requiring a new gauge.

Unplug the gang plug on eng and clean contacts esp the female, if your dizzy has a ground wire check to be sure its making contact on both ends.
