Tach & Speedo install, what else do I need???

I have the tach & speedo, along with three wiring harnesses. They are relatively new. One looks to connect to the three wires coming out of the control box, to the tach behind the dash, the other two look to run from the tach back to the engine. My question is with the speedo. On the wiring harness, there appears to be a few wires that allow you to make a double pigtail connection. Do I simply plug the corresponding wires from the speedo into those double connections on the tach wiring harness? If I do this, there will be a few wires that will not be used. Does this sound right or is there a fourth wiring harness that I need? I was told at one point I should have three wiring harnesses which I have. Help please. Rich

What kind of speedo do you have.

The Yamaha Original with speed, bat voltage, distance and fuel readings?

OK, That I was I have too, may have as many as six harness.

What ever pins got the same color is supposed to go togheter between the dials.

The rpm-dial gets trim info from the engine (first harness), Oil level from the engine (second harness), misc cables from the controlbox (yellow, black, green and the blue connects to the yellow (put a switch between if you want, it for backlight) (Third harness).

The speed-dial gets three connections (Blue, Yellow, Black) from the rpm-dial. You will sometimes have two black connection, one is for the backlight lamp.
The red is coming from the control box (I guess its for voltage).

The fuel level are optional and comes from extra/seperate White and black (this could actually be your third black, confused) connection. If you don't use fuel readings you can either shortcut them or leave them apart (full or empty fuel reading)(Fouth harness).
Then you got the hose to pick up the water pressure (speed reading)(Fifth harness).
Some have an extra fuel flow meter which comes with an extra harness as well, its goes to the engine (Sixth harness).

Good luck...

Re: Tach & Speedo install, what else do I need???

All of this is from memory so I may be off on a couple of points.

2 of the harnesses should run back to the engine. One of them is probably a 10-wire harness and the other is for the trim sender and low-oil-pressure sensor. The 3rd harness runs from the control box to the gauges. In my case, the first 2 harnesses were bundled in the Yamaha rigging kit (multifunction tach + speedo & cables) and the 3rd was bundled with the boat. I also had an unbundled wire that ran from the fuel sensor in the built-in gas tank that connects for the fuel display and the pitot for the speedometer.

There are a few extra wires with bullet connectors coming out of the control box (red, green, and blue?) held together by a black plastic connector that are only used if you have an aux. trim switch connection. The other wires that come out of the control box are 12V unswitched (red), 12V switched (yellow), tach sender (green), gauge lights (blue), and ground (black).

Does this sound like what you have?

Yes, it does sound like my set up. I'll go home tonight and look at the wire configurations and colors and see how much of this matches up with mine. I know I need the thin hose coming from the engine to the speedo, mine was cut last year. I'll let you know tomorrow. You've been a big help. Thanks Ratracer. Rich

Re: Tach & Speedo install, what else do I need???

Okay, here is what I have. Conrtol box: the ten pin main wiring harness, two sets of bulleted wiring harnesses, first, 12v unswitched (red), 12v switched (yellow), tach sender (green), and ground (black), no blue? Second harness has double red, light green, light blue, bulleted, held togther with black plastic connector. The three wiring harnesses I have are color coded as follows: 1). Eight foot, with one end having three wires with bullet connections, Green, Yellow, and Black. The other end of this harness has, one Yellow, one Green, one Blue, one Black. Then it has a double Green wire going into a single bullet connector and a double Black wire going into a single bullet connection. I think I see how thi is configured, the one end has the blue wire tapped into a double yellow wire a foot or so from the end. I hope I made sense. So when you turn the switch on the guages will light.

Harness 2 looks like this: one Solid Green and one Green w/red stripe. It has what appears to be a female and male plug that can accept up to four wires, it only has two now. (16ft. long)

Harness 3 looks like this: one Black, one Orange, one Pink, one Grey. It also has a female and male connections having all slots taken filled with wires.

My Tach has: one Black and Blue together to the side of the main set of wires. The main set of wires has, one Black, one Yellow, one Green. Then it has a female connection with Grey, Pink, Black with a white stripe and Orange. The second male connection has, one Green with a white stripe and one Green with a red stripe. I see now where the two harnesses are attached.

My Speedo has: one Black and Blue together to the side of the main set of wires. The main set of wires has, two Black, one Yellow, one Red, one White, one White with a blue stripe, one Grey, and finally the hose connection.

When connecting the wires, it looks as though one Black wire is not matching up with another?

Any suggestions?

Rich

Harness 2 is your Oil level harness.
Harness 3 is your Trimsender harness.

Tach:
The black and blue from the tach is for backlight, black goes to black from control box, Blue goes to yellow from control box via an optional switch.

The Black, yellow and green goes to the same color from the control box. Note that you now have two blacks from the tach going to the one from the controlbox.

The female connection (Harness 3) goes to the trimsender in the engine via an Yamaha harness
cable.

The male connection (harness 2) goes to the oil level indicator in the engine via an Yamaha harness cable.

The Speedo:
Black and blue connectes to (piggy back) the the same color on the tach (Its for back light).

Hose goes to engine or other pick up tube on the transom.

Red goes to red from control box.

The two blacks goes togheter and connect to the black from the tach (piggy back).
Yellow goes to the yellow from the tach (piggy back).

The white is for fuel level, it messaures resistance between black and white, if you dont have a fuel sender you can either just leave it (give empty reading) or connect it to black (gives you a fuel fuel reading)

The two last one (white/blue and grey) I don't have, I gues they are for fuel flow/consumption, they should goe by a harness to the engine if I understand correct.

Let me know how it works...

I saw that there i third instrument, fuel management, it gets some kind of speed signal from the speedo, may be that are your white/blue and grey connector.
