50hp 1987 johnson. Previous owner never had a tach on the motor and I cannot live without one so I bought all new gauges (Tach, speed, trim) and hooked the tach up to the white box via plug (grey wire). Tach Is a teleflex sahara gauge set to position 6. Works fine untill the motor goes about 4500+ rpms then the needle goes back to 4k and stays there untill i back the motor off then it goes back to reading the proper rpms. Battery connections are good with wingnuts **tightned with big pliers**. Any Ideas?

Check the charging system and make sure the boat is charging when the engine reaches higher rpms. It should be at least 13 volts, but usually 14 volts.

I'd call TeleFlex and talk to tech support and see what they have to say ...They should stand behind their product..

Phone: (941) 907-1000

If your tach. plugs into the control box, check that connection, those can be troublesome.

Also, make sure your battery terminals are tight and clean. Wing nuts don't cut it there.

Also, remove the negative battery terminal from the engine block and clean it THOROUGHLY including the bolt threads.

Do all of this with the battery disconnected, of course.

Gold....just read the install instructions that came with my new teleflex Amega..which i just installed in the last week..it says for J/E 70hp and above use 6P for 2 Cyl i.e. your 50 to use 5P

Try this and see if it helps....
