My tach is stuck on 3k. Any suggestions on how to fix it or time for a new gauge?

Re: Tach stuck

The Quicksilver brand tach used with Mercs is supposed to go to zero (no higher than 50 rpm) when the ignition is first turned on (before starting). If yours is Merc, and it doesn't dealers have them for about $88. Bought one a couple months ago.

When you turn the key off, the tachs tend to stay where ever.

Re: Tach stuck

Since tachs are very delicate electronic instruments, you can not smack it with a 6 pound fine adjustment tool. You must use 16 ounce psychology.

Seriously, I had the same problem with a tach and it drove me crazy: I would smack the dash and it would change positions and maybe read for a couple of seconds but not read properly. A new replacement tach would not work either.

I had another non-related (No choke on start) electrical problem which required replacement of the switch. With a new ignition switch, the tach started working properly. Apparently, puonding on the dash would jiggle the old switch and get some function.
