Tach stuck

@ 6000rpm or so. The charging system works on the motor, what could it be? its a 77 55hp evinrude. My fish finder shows that the battery does charge when its running. Also the battery never dies so thats another sign the charger works i geuss lol.

Clean the terminals on the back of the tach , make sure its getting 12v on the purple wire..retest then toss it.

BTW, the factory service manual says;

" replace with known good tach, if it works dispose the old one".

So its just another consumable but a necessary and neat one to have.

I think if you cut one open you might find a chip inside that converts pulses to variable v, I know the speedo in my volvo is designed like that and the chips are notorious for failing.

My understanding is the rectifier "clips" the AC wave and sends the resulting pulse to the tach.

AND I should know, I'm a chef after all.
