tach/volt meter mystery

2005 Johnson 90 HP--ok, for a short time neither worked. Now the volt meter works and the tach works only in neutral. For maybe 2 mintues these both worked yesterday while on the water in gear. Help me solve this , please. Yes, I should have a shop manual but fact is I don't at the present time and I am not sure it would help in this situation.

There are a lot of possibilities, however, in gear or neutral is not one of them. The purple wire is common to both gauges and powers both (+12VDC). I would look around the shifter to see if you have a short on the purple wire.

well, today it worked in gear out of gear and did not work in gear or out so must be a lost wire connection would you agree. the thing that puzzles me does not the tach work off the same wire that is part of the charging system. if so how does my voltmeter work and the tach not?

check the connections behind the meters, probably a loose or dirty connection.
