I just purchased a “BEEDE” tach and need help wiring it up. The motor is Mercury 60HP 91’ or 92’ (OD220213). On the back of the Tach there are four terminals: +12V, GND, SIG, and LIGHT. The Tach harness on the control has 5 wires: Black, Brown/White strip, Grey, Purple, and Light Brown or Tan. The Mer. Dealer wanted to sell a wiring harness for $40 and I just can’t see spending that much for two feet of cable. I check the Mer. Web site and determined the pole setting should be set to 4=12P, is that correct. Any help wiring this tach would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tach wiring.

Nightser,
I have just installed one of the Tachs from Beede and love it. I just wired mine in, by using a Voltmeter and finding the correct wires.

I attached the Light pole to a wire that I then ran up to one of the other instruments lights.

Attached the Ground to a ground wire that was in the vicinity of where I was mounting on the dash.

For the 12 Volts, I would try using a Voltmeter on your connector that you say that you have in the boat, to find the 12 Volt wire that is switched by the key.

The signal wire may be a bit trickier to find out which one it is. Mine was labeled on the engine block, that the Purple for my Force 125 engine was the wire for Tach. I am not sure what yours would be, but you can probably find out in the manual or pick up a clymers shop manual, that should tell you this.

The 12 P is for a 12 Pole Alternator. I had to get mine from Beede to support up to a 20 Pole alternator for my weird engine. I would say that this should be correct for this engine, or you can call Beede's tech support, they were great in working with me.

Hope this helps

Thanks,
Bryan Cox
