I need a new tach on my boat. The Tach I have now has an hour meter. Can I replace it with a tach that doesn't? Will I need to just not plug in the wire that powers the meter? Thanks.

Your replacement gauge doesn't have to have an hour meter. I've seen plenty replacement tachs that don't. They also sell stand alone hour meters that you could install and mount pretty much anywhere you like.

Re: Tach with hour meter replacement

It all really depends on the existing tach and 'hour meter', and what you want.

For example some of the early Sea Rays had a clock type hour meter built into the tach. Later models just had a display that took the hour data from the engine computer (PCM). If the existing tach has a clock type hour meter, then you will lose the history unless you keep the old tach to show to possible future buyers. If the tach is just displaying the data from the engine computer, then the hours history does not go away. On Mercruiser engines for example, a tech can read the ECM and tell the number of hours regardless of whether there is a display, or not.

The tach has the mechanical type hour meter. Would I be able to replace it with a digital one? I may just do away with it all together. They are cheaper.
