tach works intermittently... doesn't work more often than not

Hi. Thanks for the help previously. What would could cause a tach to bounce and work intermittently other than the obvious that the tach is faulty? Might this be related to a spark issue which might explain lack of bottom end performance. Also... how far down from the keel should the motor be hanging? The motor is a 115 on 15 ft trihull

Some of the motors with water cooled regulated rectifiers did have problems with tachometers.

I believe that the recommendation was to connect directly to the yellow/gray wire off the stator, rather than the grey wire at the control.
