78 merc 700..i hooked up tach ign..ground turned key and goes to 0 like it is suppose to..hooked send to the gray..and nothing..tried brown and nothing..tried orange and tach seems to work..but it only hits about 3600..what is the orange wire..and 3600 seems to low..thanks

The control box has a tach receptacle on the front (rubber plug). Your tach signal wire should connect to the should connect to brown wire in the control box....<br />Orange is the kill wire for ignition and may damage your tach (too high voltage and wrong frequency)<br />If your tach doesn't work when connected to the brown wire, it could be a connection problem from the box to the motor, or the charging system could be defective (bad rectifier or stator). This will prevent tach operation.<br /><br />I hope you have an appropriate tach for this engine?
