The needle on my tachometer shows at about 1000 when the motor is not running. When I turn the engine on then the tach starts to work. At WOT it shows about 5000. Does it sound like I need a new tach? The engine is a 115/80 jet johnson. Is this normal or not?

Re: tach

I would get a new tach...they're not that expensive. RPMs are very important for an outboard, you don't want to be getting the wrong reading.

Re: tach

Most tachs do not "Zero" when the ignition is turned off. When you turn the key to the ON (Not Start) position, it should go to zero. It's probably OK, but you may want to compare wide open throttle readings with a know good borrowed tach.

Thanks RB<br /> Yep the tack went to 0 when I turned the key to the on position. Do you know what RPM this motor should be running at WOT?

Re: tach

You should be up around 5500, unless it is different for jets.
