An auto (4 stroke, gas, distributor) tach recieves it's instructions from the coil or computer (ECU). Usually coil but more recently - computer. <br />A boat motor (4 stroke, gas, distributor) tach recieves it's instructions from the coil or computer. No difference (except, the marine tachs may be splashproof).<br /><br />Diesel engines - the tach recieves it's instructions from the alternator (or more recently, the computer). Different.<br /> <br />2 stroke tachs use the alt/magneto or computer. Different.
