Tach?

I took my 88hp 95 evinrude out today and the tach held a good mark on acceleration, but when I leveled off the tach would jump all over. The motor ran smooth no, miss or spits. Bad connection or new tach or is there something more serious? Also changed spark plugs due to #1 cylinder plug having been white and the others black and oily. After running the motor awhile and killing it at WOT I checked the plugs and all the new ones were running white the ceramic inside creme to brown. The #1 cylinger was more dry than the others. Is that due to it running hotter? Are you suppose to check condition after running or when cool? sorry about all the questions, but really need help. I think the motor is good to go, but I roasted one last fall!!

Re: Tach?

minnoak,

If #1 is the "highest" cylinder, that is not uncommon.

You could probably do the following.

1. Replace the thermostats.

2. Replace the water divertors, under the head.

Also, run nothing but Champion UL77JC4 spark plugs gapped at .040".

No other plugs will make that engine run right. Stay away from NGK's on that engine.

Re: Tach?

I've got QL77JC4 in now gapped at .030 per manuel. Is this incorrect? Any tach answers?

Re: Tach?

I figured out the tach! There was a slightly loose connection at the motor and the ground behind the tach was VERY loose. That will do it. Can anyone answere my other questions? Thanks
