Tacho malfunctioning

Recently on a run in my 23ft boat , powered by an evinrude 1994 v6 200hp (also recently rebuilt power head)the tacho decided not to work ,or at least did intermitantly in a slow fashion . I imediately suspected either the tacho was faulty or more likely the voltage regulator/rectifier was malfunctioning. Upon further inspection i saw that the negative battery lead had come off from the terminal on batt no'2, all very clean ,ie, no corrosion, just a bad crimp, unfortunately i was running the number 2 battery only as i changed to this when i stopped to fish . i suspect the volt reg is blown as a result.
The motor runs fine and starts fine , even the voltmeter on the dash ,and on a window in my lowrance depth sounder shows an increase in volts from 12 to about 13.6 - 14volts when the motor is running.
Question ? , Am i probably correct to assume the reg is blown or could it be some other prob.
Price for a new part i have found to be about Aud $620 quite expensive i thought . second hand the wreckers want 280 ,and no warranty !
Any suggestions please.

Thanks , Chris kennedy . Re: Tacho malfunctioning

Having a battery lead disconnect does not sound good. Put a volt meter to gray tach lead, it should read about 9 volts. If so, suspect possible bad tach.

Re: Tacho malfunctioning

Keep in mind the grey wire is A.C., not D.C.

Also, I thought the voltage was 40 plus.

For what it's worth, I blew a water cooled rect./regulator. Part cost was about $200.oo
Instead of replacing it, I went with a straight, air cooled rectifier for $20.oo No regulator but when the voltage climbs to 16 volts, I just turn on the lights. This has worked well for me.
If your seeing 13.6 volts after running a bit, however, then it sounds like your charging system is working..
