My tacho has been reading high for a while and I may have found the problem. I noticed the signal wire to the tacho, leading from the regulator, was wrapped in a loom that also had the 2 yellow AC wires from the stator in it. The signal wire ran parallel to the stator wires and I think was picking up an induced current (extra signal pulses) from the magnetic field of the stator wires. I removed the signal wire from the loom and wound it around the ground wire to get it away from the stator wires. My tacho is now reading correctly.
It may just be a coincidence. I can?t understand how the tacho worked before if the wire was like this from new. The only thing I can think of is I tidied up the wiring on the motor a while ago and may have moved the signal wire then.
The motor is a 1998 75 hp Force. If anyone has one of these engines and can be bothered I would like to know where the signal wire on their motor runs.
Thanks
Dean
