Just wanted to check as I am not sure how many pole a 3cyl 2 stroke OB is (I think three?) that this tacho will work "Tachometer; 0-8000 RPM mercury part number 895283A06"

Try 12 pole, 6 pulse. Has nothing to do with the number of cylinders. Most generic tachometers are driven by the engine alternator. Set the tach to 6P.

There are plenty of "generic" tachs that will work also... and much less expensive. Some are "iduction" tachs... just tape or zip tie the lead to the number 1 spark plug wire.... I bought a digital one for $36 that's been working great for 3 years.
