Tachometer acting funny

Hello,

We have had a lot of rain lately and some of it got into my engine cover. Because of this I just had to replace my slave solenoid. Now that the boats running again my Tach is acting funny. When the boat was at idle it was indicating 3k RPM's and kinda bounced around a little. Someone suggested it could be that my coil is going bad. Yes? No? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Tachometer acting funny

Once you pin point the problem it may be alot easier to say is its related to your other problem.

Is the problem repeatable ? If so How is your tach behaiving at different rpms ?

If the behavior is intermittent look for connection issues ; loose/ corroded, wet etc

The tach gauge needs a good power supply and ground along with a pulsing signal from the engine.

I just replaced the coil and cleaned all the connections and the tach is still not right. With the engine running amd at idle, the tach reads 3k RPM. Any more suggestions on how to fix this issue. Thanks

I second Bondo's motion.

You may want to use a DVM to verify the tach has a good gound and is getting 12v power-- but assuming thats all present--
