I've been told I need a 6 pulse Tachometer for my 1972 ESL72R Johnson 100HP V4 motor. It has the older capacitance discharge amplifier system where the charging system/alternator is separate from the ignition system. I currently have a Tachometer - 1970's era but the back of it has the screw terminals C 2 3 and 4 and the instructions say for a V4 2 stroke to jumper all 4 screws together. I assumed this covered my motor.
Can I use Tachs that have this C, 2, 3, 4 jumper configuration or must I buy a tach that specifically has a #6 pulse setting?
The Tach works- but I have reason to believe the readings are 20 to 30% faster than the actual RPM speed of the motor.
I'm going to buy a new tach- but want to make sure I buy the right one and whether a tach that has the C 2 3 and 4 setting can be used.
