Hello,
I'm new here and in the process of restoring my 74 StarCraft Holiday. I need help with finding the PROPER Tachometer for the setup that I have. The boat has the MercControl throttle box with the 3 Spade Female Plug towards the front of the Control. I need to source the proper pigtail to go from the control box to a tach in the dash. I also need help with learning what tach will work with the 76 Merc 850 2 stroke please. I know there's a ton of knowledgable people on here ... I'm hoping to get as much info on this topic as I can. Thanks ... and I'm glad to be a member here!

I sourced the pigtail for my Johnson from eBay.

I also sourced a tach that is usable on many motors. It's adjustable for number of cylinders and such. It was an older version I guess as it was basically half the cost and had not been opened.

Thanks Mike,
I'm looking for Part #'s and 'where to find' kind of info from people who have this boat/motor/era that have the info I need. The MerControl was put into A LOT of boats from the 60's thru the 80's, I'm sure ..... and the Mercury 850 2 Stroke in an iconic engine. There GOT to be some more members out there who can offer some useful info?? Hopeful ...

I believe the part number is 45887. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...MOTE CONTROL ASSEMBLY (ELECTRIC) F/parts.html.

Any tach should work as long as it is adjustable for number of cylinders or puulses and such.

Here's a link to wiring for Teleflex Gauges. http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/document.do?docId=837 when you find Tachometer Guide (Outboard) down in the doc it talks about how to set the switch on the back so it works with your motor.

You can search this forum for Merc tach and find a number of posts.

Tried to open each of those links Mike .... will not open. Been having trouble with posting and accessing info since I joined. But thanks for trying to get info to me. Is there any way I can see the entire link?

Try to remember that iboats sponsors this forum and as an online retailer prefers not to have links to a competitor's site. Thanks.

Moved this to the Mercury outboard forum. The tach questions are much more about the motor rather then the Starcraft boat it's mounted too. If you are doing some renewal, restoration, rebuilding to the Holiday, start a topic about that over in the resto/rebuild forum.

And post a pix of your Starcraft here:
Post a pic of your starcraft!

Lots of great tin boat building going on in both the resto forum and Starcraft owners forums, good luck w/ your project:

Holiday, Any modern tachometer for use by Mercury Outboards should work. These tachometers work off the stator pulses, not the ign system. Set the tach to 12P or whatever is recommended by the manufacturer for Mercury inline 4/6 motors. Remove your cowling and look for a brown wire. You should find it connected to one of the yellow wires on the rectifier. If so that is fine. If it is not connected to the rectifier, post back and tell us where it is connected.

I am not sure where to get the pigtail.
