Has anyone had a tachometer apart? Mine is stuck at about 450 indicated. No movement at any time. Can they just stick? Is freeing the needle all thats necessary? Asking this to try to keep the gauges the same. Who has tried, what was the outcome, would you do something different? Or just place the old one in circular file 13?
2005 Mercury 75 if it makes any difference.
thanx.

My philosophy is this, it is already broken, so what are you going to do to it but maybe fix it. And that is how I learned how to do so many things in life through the years. If you can take it apart without destroying the tach case, go for it. Heck, even if you destroy the tach case go for it. I mean it is not working so what's to loose... There really isn't much inside tachs. A very few parts and a meter movement. Could be something got stuck in the meter movement. And if you can clear the stuck piece, you probably fixed it. JMHO

Usually that are too well sealed to get open to try and fix 'em. The moisture does find a way in, though.

usually its the air-core motor that dies and causes it to "stick"

the needle is just along for the ride

there are gauge rebuilding services out there, D&D speedometer in the twin cities and the speedometer shop in Milwaukee are two that come to mine. however for that price, you can buy all new gauges.

Yeah, it's already broken. All good information. Thanks guys. Think I will try to get it apart and see what I can see. Worst case scenario, I have to buy a new one . That WORKS.:thumb:

The tachometer needle wasn't stainless steel. It was rusted SOLID. It took a pair of pliers and 2 days of soaking in WD-40 to get it loose. Even then I never got it free enough to spin on its own.
. I bought a new one.
