Hi, do I need to buy 4 tachometer because I have 4 cylinders? I know one end of the tachometer will need to be connected to the ignition coil.

?????------You just need 1 tachometer.-----The tachometer you need will be driven by pulses from the battery charging coils in the stator.----Not the ignition coils at all !!!!

Your control box should have a three pin plug on the aft end. You'll need the female connector. Black lead is ground, purple is 12v, grey is the signal.

I have the connector on my control box. Will any tach work with my 1973 Johnson 115 115esl73 or do I need a particular one?

Excellent, I had been wondering about the 3 prong connector was for. Thanks for your lightening fast response.

Bobsquatch, It's not nice to hi-jack a post. Read the rules at the top of the forum and start a new one.

Tried but I've never been able to make anything other than a somewhat period correct OMC tach work right?

If you go with a OMC tach, it'll have an additional light blue lead coming from it. That's for the light.

I just bought a Faria universal aftermarket analog Tach for about $50 new on Amazon for my 1989 Johnson 70. I just hooked up the gray wire from the control box to the signal post on the gauge (and of course 12V+/-) and set the selector on the back of the gauge for my engine. The setting has to do with the pulses per revolution. Worked great.

The paper that comes with it tells you how to set the pulse/rev correctly for most engine make, model, cylinders, year with a little dial on the back of the gauge.

Looks like they only support 1977 and newer for plug and play. If older than that, they have some rewire suggestions at the engine/rectifer. Here is the PDF:

http://faria-instruments.com/site_manuals/IS0012w.pdf

And the one I bought was the Faria 33005 Coral 7000 rpm Tachometer.

The control box in picture on post #5 has to do with power trim and nothing to with hooking up a tachometer.

I was scratching my head thinking, what the heck control is that.. I thought it looked like a late 80s TNT relay set up

what year is the OP's motor....some tachs are systems matched.. and have SLOW warning capacity, and have an 8 pin connector .... although they usually have a way to connect wires that are coming from a control that doesn't have an 8 pin lead

Ya. That looks like an external trim relay box. Please do NOT connect the tach there ...

I was referring to the box that connects the throttle, shift, ignition, etc. Y'know, the one next to the helm ...?

The tach 'receptacle' is on the back, just under the throttle tension thumbscrew. Might have a cap on it.

Like so:
