My 2001 Wellcraft Martinique had a tachometer that started to stick. A firm knock on the gauge would make the dial move. After a few months of this it finally quit moving all together.
I checked the engine for a bad connection to no avail. I pulled the tach out and checked the wiring. I had power and the gauge did not work hooked up to the starboard wiring so i knew it was the gauge.
After a 1 hour search online for the proper match and finding none, I decided to take it apart. It turns out the posts sticking out the back are not 'wired' they are held in place (and electrically connected) by tightening the nuts on back in the bracket and on the wiring. With that in mind and having noticed a slight wiggle on one of the posts I re-assebled it tightly and it worked just fine!
So lesson learned, if your tach is not working, ensure the posts sticking out the back are firmly seated into the back of the unit.
