I have a 3.0L Mercruiser (Maxum 1998 1700SR). Bought last week and the tach is not working.

Where should I begin troubleshooting?

I had already repair the Speedometer gauge. I have a bad trim sender. Can the trim sender be repair or must be replace?

Also check for ground connection on the back of the tach. You can try cleaning the trim sender but a lot of times it needs to be replaced which is not as easy as you would think.

If I put the volt meter on the tachometer cable. Should I get any voltage reading from those cable? "Purple" / "Purple" / "Black"?

Did you read the manual I provided?

You should have 12 volts from purple to black. Their should be a gray signal wire back there also. If not that most likely is your problem...

If it used to work and it no longer does, the tach has probably bad. I've got to replace one myself...
