I recently had problems with my 130 hp Johnson (1995) I rebuilt this motor twice, and I would like to thank iboats forum for all the helpful advise you guys gave me.. I am now breaking in my new rebuild (re-sleeved cylinders). Which so far, has been going well. But, one thing I am having problems with, is my tachometer, which I replaced when I rebuilt the motor. On the first rebuild, I replaced the rectifier, and on the second rebuild, I replaced the tachometer. In the beginning, before I replaced the rectifier, the needle would bounce back and forth . since I replaced the tack, I may start the motor, and it will idle nicely just under 1000 rpm's , throttle forward and about 3000 rpm's she get's out of the hole and on a plane. Then all of the sudden she goes to 0. I slow down , and now in neutral, forward with the throttle and around 3000rpm's she kicks in again and tack starts acting right again. sometimes it feels like maybe it could be in the throttle. What do you think the possibilities are. If there is a connection to the throttle, and you unscrew the assembly around the throttle, and then exposed, do you have to be careful stuff in the becomes disattached. will it loosen so I can pull the throttle out so I can check the connections on the inside of the throttle stick. Thanks for the help. Jimmy

Do you have a side mount control box? If so, your tach signal is taken from there, it plugs into the back of the box. That connection can be troublesome.

Also, what is you volt meter reading when the tach acts up?

I have a 1996 johnson 130 v4 and had recently had tach problems myself. I started by replacing the tach itself moved on to the reg/rectifier. Then the tach started to work intermitenly. I finally brought it in to my mechanic and found out the stator was the problem. You might want to check that....just a thought

Re: tachometer not working right

in response to the readings on the votage meter, this weekend I took the boat out, the readings on the votage meter does not seem to be changing when the tachometer acts up, the reading is about 15 . i noticed once i started the motor, the tack was working, then once I idles down the canal after about 5 minutes , the tack stopped working, then I throttles forward to about 3000 rpm's and up on a plane, now the tack is working again, about 2 minutes into the plane I throttled down a little just barely and I am talking from 3000 rpm's to about 2500 rpms, but the needle jumped to 1000rpm's, go forward and upto 3000 rpm . back and forth and you would see the same as much as you want to play back and forth with the throttle. so either a connection is loose, or the stater because you are increasing and decreasing power. what do you think. thanks
