The tach on my '92 120hp evvy is acting up: it sometimes works (usually at lower rpm) and jumps around alot. Any suggestions? I disconnected the VRO; would this affect the tach?

Also, how can you tell the difference between a "four stroke" and a "two stroke"? What is my evvy?
Thanks,
Jim

Frankly I have no idea what a "evvy" might be.

A 4 stroke has a camshaft and intake/exhaust valves. The piston has combustion and a power stroke every other revolution.

a 2 stroke simply had leaf/reed valves and has a combustion and power stroke every revolution.

I would suggest checking your model number to see what you have....is this a new problem or pre-existing (i.e. new since vro disconnect) and if i'm thinking correctly if it's got VRO wouldn't it be 2-stroke??? just my $0.02

I can't see how disconnecting the VRO would affect the tach.....but i'm no expert, I'm sure others here will chime in with more useful knowledge.....

Re: tachometer on Evvy

First thing I'd check are the wires going to the tach. Sounds like a loose connection to me, made worse by high rpm vibrations. Since I'm a pi$$ poor mechanic, I always look for the loose wires first, because that's something I can deal with.
