Tachometer problem

I have a 115 Mariner, the tachometer indicates high revving, but the motor isnt actually revving that high. I'm not a technical person so just wat to know if it's just a cable problem and nothing serious

Tachometers usually have multiple settings for different motors. Make sure yours is set to 12P or 6C, whichever you have. If that doesn't fix it, check the ground, power and sender wires to the tach for corrosion.

Yes, and the Tach should be connected to one of the yellow stator wires, where it receives an AC voltage. If the rectifier (or voltage regulator) is bad, it can affect the tach reading.
