ok i have a 1957 crestliner viking 14' with a gale 40hp and ive been dealing with my tach issues for 2 years now and its very frustrating because i wana know if im runing the propper rpms. My tach works perfect at an idle but when you push the throttle forward the tach acts like its hooked up to the throttle ( example u can go from a idle and hit the throttle wide open and the tach goes rite up to 5500 rpms and stays there when cleartly the motors nowhere near that rpm, then over time if u stay wide open the rpms will go down to 5000rpms. Also if ur cruising at lets say 2500rpms the tach shows ur going like 4500rpms. What would cause this to happen?

Re: tachometer problems????

Hi dhonda, Check all lead ends at tach, and motor for corrosion, repair where necessary. As a signal/grnd and pwr test, you may want to remove the tach and rehook close to the engine, bypassing most of the original power/signal wires running from the battery and engine to the dash. Try it. Else I'd suggest the tach is faulty and replace it as well as the wire run after testing the new one.
