tachometer questions

i recently upgraded from a 1960 johnson 40hp to a 1992 johnson 40 hp. can i use the exsisting tach? it has a switch on the back for 2 3 or 4 cyl. but i saw something on the teleflex website about the alternator and the # of poles.whats up with that stuff, do i need a new tach with all these new setting for the # of poles or what?

I think both of those engines are six pulse engines so it should work.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Don' think that tach is gonna work. If the back is, like you say, marked 2,3 or 4 cyl. it ain't gonna work. <br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

it might work... You would have to connect it to the coil instead of the alternator.
