Tachometer setting question....

The shop manual for my 1991 200hp says the tach should be set at 6 which I'm guessing is pulses. However my VDO tach has a series of eight dip switches that I think correspond to # of pole settings. (I have the tach spec sheet) Therefore am I correct to assume that the setting should be 12?

Yes. If it's poles, then it's the 12 setting..

I spoke too soon :|

It looked okay at the dock.....but when I took it for a spin it began acting erratically again. I have already changed the rectifier (I had a spare) and can definately confirm that the stator is charging the batteries ( I have a Xantrex Link 20 battery gauge ). Does the fact that it is charging rule out the rectifier or are these two different function provided by the rectifier? I guess the tach could be bad, but I will go through the connections and wiring first to make sure I didn't miss anything.

To Add.....

It appears that the tach functions normally for a short period then it zeros out . Intermittantly returns to function what appears to be the correct RPM. Pole setting is twelve. Does this still sound like a rectifier problem?
