My Tach (Outboard Merc 125) sits at 1200 when off and when the motor is idling. Would this still give me an accurate reading as we rev the motor?

When looking at the back of the tach it is set at 6p - is this correct for a 2stroke 4 cyl?

6P is correct. Does the motor sound like it's idling fast?

Tach should zero when power is applied, motor not running. if it doesn't do that, something is wrong. I would take a screwdriver and exercize the setting switch, to get the corrosion off the contacts. The gauge sounds flakey.

Also if you are idling at 1200, it will bang pretty hard when you put it in gear. The gears will not like this!
