I have a 95 model Force 120. I bought it new and has never had a tach on it. I have one now and need to know how to properly wire it to the engine or the control box.

Re: tachometer wiring

Tachometers work by "counting" alternator pulses, and have a setting based on how many poles your alternator has.

Your engine should have a terminal on the terminal block label "tachometer" I'm not absolutely certain on this, because I don't know your specific model, but I know mine has it, even though it has never had an alternator hooked up to it.

You may not be able to just put ANY tachometer on there. Since your tach counts alternator pulses, you need to know how many poles your alternator has. Many Force outboards have a 20-pole Prestolite alternator, which you won't find on any other type of outboard. If that's the case, your choices for a tachometer are pretty limited, the only one I have ever found is part #53743P from Teleflex.
