Tachometer

I have a 2002 Yamaha 90 hp 2 stroke. The tachometer has been accurate. Last time out, it read 2000 at idle and when cruising at about 3500 rpm it read 5500 to 6000.WOT is 7000+. I did nothing to the boat other than charge the trolling batteries under the console. Otherwise nothing. What is going on???

Did you bump the wires? Make sure your cranking battery connectons are clean and tight. But I'll bet the rotary switch on the back is tickling two positions.
