Check out

http://www.northerntool.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=524744&prmenbr=6970

I put one of these on a 6HP Rude about three years ago, and loved it. Since then I have put them on 9½HP, 15HP, and 40HP motors, and keep one in my toolbox for use when working on motors.

They work by taking the wire that leads from the unit and wrapping it around one spark plug wire. They show the RPM's when the motor is running, and the hours when the motor is stopped.

I haven't tried using one as a remote tach, as the wire that comes with the unit is only about 36-inches long but you should be able to extend the wire. You might get the best results using a shielded wire for the extension. I think an old piece of coax cable would work.

Re: tachometer

For a remote setup on the dash of one of those look up the tinytach website and order direct. the manufacturer made up one with a custom length cable for my 16' boat.
