I’m trying to buy a tachometer that will work with 1980’s and 1990 Johnson Evinrude triples.
I’ve found some with “system check” lights that are 1996 and up. My newest motor is a 1995. Will they still work for rpm readings? The system check isn’t huge for me but I will be upgrading to even newer in another few years

Tachs operate generally from the alternator output. You will need to know how many poles your motor has. Most tachs have a spot on the back where you can adjust the number of poles and or pulses. If I remember Teleflex has a pretty good chart on motors and the amount of poles.
