Does anybody know a source for finding out what tachs will work with the above engines? The local Cummins dealer doesn't have a clue.

Thanks.
look at stewart instuments as well as the cummins marine site. there are basically two choices one is a mechanical drive the other uses a transducer and is electric.
I dont do much diesel work but most diesels are basically the same as far as tachs.
there is another maker but I cant think of them right now
Isspro also manufacture programmable Tacho's for diesel use.
In some cases they can be run from the alternator and read the pulses from the stator windings or use a magnetic pickup installed up to the ring gear teeth. The latter is the best method but needs a 3/4" NF threaded hole at 90 degrees to the crankshaft line.
The engine has a removable flywheel housing however and it is a simple enough job to do on the bench. If you look closely there may already be a pad cast into the housing for the pick up in the right place.

Peter
Thanks Rodbolt and KiwiPete. These Cummins have the pickups slaved to the fuel pumps so I'm guessing they are Hall effect type, but they could be driven. I'll check out SW and Isspro's web sites.
Cummins would be able to confirm the type of pick up and should also be able to give you the number of pulses per rev.
You might need to have the CPL # off the engine and serial # etc.

Regards

Peter
