On this '95 3.0LX I have been tinkering with the tach is not doing anything and I was wondering where it picks up it's signal on the engine and generally how I might troubleshoot it?

Chaps,
The "Gray" wire carries the signal from the ignition system to the "sender" terminal on the tach.

If you have points ignition (probably not with 3.0LX) then the gray wire is connected to the (-) terminal of the coil.

If you have DDIS, the gray wire is connected to one of the 3 connector plugs on the Distributor Module.

If you have EST ignition the gray wire goes to a connector on the "coil", which I don't actually think is a coil, but more of an electronic coil.

I think the first step in debugging would be to check the tach for power. Should have 12 volts accross the "Batt" and "Gnd" terminals on the Tach itself.

You should check the gray wire for corrosion, etc.

After that I'm not sure how to diagnosis it. I would try a voltmeter (in AC mode) against the Gray wire on both ends.

Wake

Thanks Wake, I'll start poking at it in the morning. I probably should get a service manual but I think I'll be selling this boat soon so I'm basically sponging off all the knowledge that presides in this forum and I appreciate it.
